Testing Results:
I tested your suggestion by setting up a clean installation of Joomla 5.x on a sub-domain with sample data. After creating a dummy article and menu item, the behavior was as follows:
When logged in as an appropriate user, the "Edit" button appeared as expected.
Clicking "Edit" opened the article directly in edit mode.
Comparison with Current Installation:
On my primary installation, the behavior differs. Instead of opening the article in edit mode, it triggers a new article creation interface.
